Breinlia mackerrasae Walker & MacMillan, 1974, pp.39–45 , figs. 1–4, ( Isoodon macrourus ) Cairns, Queensland.; Spratt & Varughese 1976, p.96.
Breinlia (Breinlia) mackerrasae (Walker & MacMillan) Chabaud & Bain, 1976, p. 377 ; Spratt et al. 1991, pp. 25, 68.
Type host. Isoodon macrourus (Gould) (Marsupialia: Peramelidae ).
Site in host: peritoneal cavity & subcutaneous connective tissue.
Other material examined. From subcutaneous connective tissue Isoodon macrourus QLD : 1♀, ( N1007 ) Sarina .
Distribution and hosts. Breinlia (B.) mackerrasae is known from only three short-nosed bandicoots all from north Queensland.
Remarks. Walker and MacMillan (1974) provided a thorough description of this species found in the peritoneal cavity of two short–nosed bandicoots from north Queensland in 1958. The additional female specimen noted here was collected in 1979 and recovered from subcutaneous connective tissue rather than the peritoneal cavity. It is surprising that these are the only known occurrences of this species in more than half a century, especially given the relative abundance of the host in north Queensland and the presence of medical practitioners and veterinarians interested in wildlife parasitology in the region. (Note Remarks under B. (B.) trichosuri later.)
