Taxonomic history. Opsiphanes barkeri Bristow, 1991 stat. nov. is cited in reviews, catalogs, and checklists, with no taxonomic modifications since its description until this study.

Type material. Opsiphanes cassina barkeri Bristow, 1991 was described based on the holotype female, illustrated by D’Abrera (1987) and Bristow (1991), deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Holotype / Pichilingue, 8 km S. of Quevedo, [Los Ríos], Ecuador, 1º6′S 79º 28′W, Alt. 70 m, cultiv. trop. zone, J. Barker, 1977/ O. cassina barkeri Bristow / Brit. Mus. 1981-97/ ( Fig. 163 View FIGURE 163 ).

Diagnosis. Female: DFW with the band inside the discal cell parallel to the oblique band, tapering close to the costal margin; monochromatic yellow oblique band nearly twice as wide as the DHW submarginal band. DHW with yellow, continuous, and evident submarginal band extending from the costal margin to M 2, and from there to the anal angle practically imperceptible ( Fig. 163 View FIGURE 163 ).

Comments. When describing Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov., Bristow (1991) mentioned that it is not possible to separate the males of Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov. from the males of Opsiphanes fabricii camposi stat. nov. Examination of one of the male paratypes of Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov. ( Fig. 164 View FIGURE 164 ) confirmed its resemblance to males of Opsiphanes fabricii camposi stat. nov. ( Fig. 176 View FIGURE 176 ) in having the DHW with the submarginal band evident to the anal region, a striking feature in males of Opsiphanes fabricii . It is likely that there was confusion in the analysis of the males of Opsiphanes fabricii and the males of Opsiphanes periphetes stat. nov. ( Fig. 206 View FIGURE 206 ), as in the description of Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov., Bristow (1991) commented that males have the DHW with a narrow submarginal band, ranging from only apically developed to continuous, that is, in some specimens, the DHW submarginal band does not reach the anal region, and this is one of the characters that separates Opsiphanes periphetes stat. nov. from Opsiphanes fabricii . The holotype female of Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov. is distinct from females of Opsiphanes fabricii camposi stat. nov. ( Fig. 177 View FIGURE 177 ), in having the DFW with a monochromatic yellow oblique band, with almost twice the width of the corresponding band of Opsiphanes fabricii camposi stat. nov., but resembles females of Opsiphanes periphetes stat. nov. ( Figs 207–208 View FIGURE 207 View FIGURE 208 ) from Costa Rica and Panama in these characters. In this study, it was not possible to examine females of Opsiphanes periphetes stat. nov. from Ecuador, and therefore the decision to raise Opsiphanes barkeri stat. nov. to species level is based on morphological data, considering the female holotype.

Natural history. Unknown.

Temporal distribution. Unknown.

Etymology. Likely a tribute to John Barker, collector of the specimen on which the description was based. Specimens examined. Type material ( Figs 163–164 View FIGURE 163 View FIGURE 164 ).
