Taxonomic history. Opsiphanes badius var. cauca Röber, 1906 was synonymized with Opsiphanes quiteria badius by Stichel (1907). Fassl (1914a) referred to Opsiphanes quiteria augeias as Opsiphanes augeias . Stichel (1932) proposed Opsiphanes badius f. cauca as synonymous with Opsiphanes badius stat. rest. and considered Opsiphanes quiteria augeias as a subspecies. Blandin (1977) proposed a new combination: Opsiphanes quirinus augeias . Bristow (1991) considered Opsiphanes quiteria cauca , the oldest name, as a subspecies and Opsiphanes quiteria augeias as its synonym; Casagrande (2004) followed this decision.

Type material. Opsiphanes badius var. cauca Röber, 1906 was described based on a male [holotype] from Valle del Cauca, [ Colombia]. M. M. Casagrande, O. H. H. Mielke, and G. Lamas did not find the [holotype]. Thus, a male neotype of Opsiphanes badius var. cauca Röber, 1906 is hereby designated in order to stabilize the nomenclature of this taxon. The selected neotype specimen has the same morphological characters as the male described by Röber, 1906, mainly the anterior band slightly wider and yellowish, and is deposited at the DZUP, with the following labels: / NEOTYPUS / DZ 42.577/ Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, XII-1980, 1000 m, Denhez leg./ BC-DZ/ Neotypus Opsiphanes badius var. cauca Röber, 1906 , Piovesan, Casagrande & O. Mielke det. 2022/.

Opsiphanes quiteria augeias Fruhstorfer, 1912 was described based on an unknown number of specimens from Rio Aguacatal , [Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca], Colombia, ca. 2,000 m, collected by Fassl. In the RMS collection, where part of the Fruhstorfer types are deposited, G. Lamas (pers. comm.) found a male syntype corresponding to the original description, with the following labels: / Typus/ Rio Aguacatal Colomb. W Cord. 2000 m Coll. Fassl./ augeias ♂ Fruhst. Type!/. In order to stabilize the nomenclature of this taxon, this specimen is hereby designated as the lectotype of Opsiphanes quiteria augeias Fruhstorfer, 1912 and the following labels will also be attached: / LECTOTYPUS / Lectotypus Opsiphanes quiteria augeias Fruhstorfer, 1912 , Piovesan, Casagrande & O. Mielke det. 2022/.

Diagnosis. Opsiphanes badius cauca stat. rest. differs from Opsiphanes badius badius stat. rest. and Opsiphanes badius angostura stat. nov. in the following characters: Male and female: DHW with an evident submarginal band. Male: DFW with a light-yellow oblique band. Females of Opsiphanes badius cauca stat. rest. and Opsiphanes badius angostura stat. nov. are indistinguishable ( Figs 112–114 View FIGURE 112 View FIGURE 113 View FIGURE 114 ).

Variation. FW, length: male: 48–52 mm (n=5), female: 47–55 mm (n=4). VFW, the width of the oblique band. VHW, the size and shape of the eyespot between M 3 and CuA 2 ( Figs 112–114 View FIGURE 112 View FIGURE 113 View FIGURE 114 ).

Comments. Opsiphanes quiteria augeias Fruhstorfer, 1912 remains synonymous with Opsiphanes badius cauca stat. rest., because after examination of the type material ( Figs 122–123 View FIGURE 122 View FIGURE 123 ) and considering the variation in the width and color of the DFW oblique band of all specimens examined, no characters were found to justify it as a subspecies.

Natural history. Host plants: Arecaceae : Astrocaryum sp. ( Bristow 1991) .

Geographic distribution. Panama (Coclé, Panamá, Darién) ; Colombia (Valle del Cauca) ( Fig. 117 View FIGURE 117 ), at altitudes between 400 and 2,000 m .

Temporal distribution. January–March, July–October, December.

Etymology. Reference to Valle del Cauca, Colombia.
