Type material. Opsiphanes quiteria var. meridionalis Staudinger, 1887 was described based on an unknown number of males and females from [ Santa Catarina ], southern Brazil. Bristow (1991) mentioned that the material was deposited at the MfN and did not designate a lectotype for this subspecies. After examination of the material of the MfN collection, where some of the Staudinger, types are deposited, a male syntype was found, corresponding to the original description, with the following labels: / Origin./ St. [ Santa ] Cath.[arina] Sch./ meridionalis Stgd Type/. In order to stabilize the nomenclature of this taxon, this specimen is hereby designated as the lectotype of Opsiphanes quiteria var. meridionalis Staudinger, 1887 , and the following labels will also be attached: / LECTO- TYPUS/ Lectotypus Opsiphanes quiteria var. meridionalis Staudinger, 1887 , Piovesan, Casagrande & O. Mielke det. 2022/.

Opsiphanes quiteria philon Fruhstorfer, 1907 was described based on three males and four females from Espiritu [sic] Santo, [ Brazil], collected by Julius Michaelis, deposited in the Fruhstorfer collection. Bristow (1991) designated a female as the lectotype, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / LECTOTYPE / EspiritoSanto Brasil ex coll. Fruhstorfer / quiteria philon Fruhst. / Agrees with fig. of ♀ in orig. descr. selected as type H.T. (G.T. april, 1961)./ Fruhstorfer Coll. B.M. 1937-285./.

Opsiphanes quiteria oresbios Fruhstorfer, 1912 was described based on an unknown number of specimens from São Paulo [ Brazil] and Paraguay. After examination of the material of the NHMUK collection, where some of the Fruhstorfer types are deposited, a female syntype was found, corresponding to the original description, with the following labels: / Type / Brasilien São Paulo Fruhstorfer / quiteria philon Fruhst./ quiteria oresbios Fruh. São Paulo. 1912 ./ Fruhstorfer Coll. B.M. 1937-285./ this cannot be a type as the insect is described from Espiritu-Santo (G.T.)/. In order to stabilize the nomenclature of this taxon, this specimen is hereby designated as the lectotype of Opsiphanes quiteria oresbios Fruhstorfer, 1912 , and the following labels will also be attached: / LECTOTYPUS / Lectotypus Opsiphanes quiteria oresbios Fruhstorfer, 1912 , Piovesan, Casagrande & O. Mielke det. 2022/.

Opsiphanes quiteria var. obidonoides Breyer, 1939 was described based on a male [holo] type from Misiones, Argentina and deposited in the Breyer collection. Bristow (1991) suggested that the material was deposited at the MLP. After examination of the material of the MLP collection, a male was found, with the following labels: / Holotipo./ COLL. BREYER REP. ARGENTINA MISSIONES / 3002/ Opsiphanes quiteria obinoides [sic] Breyer/.

Diagnosis. Opsiphanes quiteria meridionalis differs from Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria in having the DHW with an evident submarginal band extending to the anal region and usually 2/3 the width of the DFW oblique band; and differs from Opsiphanes quiteria quirinalis in the yellow or orange color of the DFW and DHW bands ( Figs 140–142 View FIGURE 140 View FIGURE 141 View FIGURE 142 ).

Variation. FW, length: male: 40–46 mm (n=6), female: 49–56 mm (n=4). DFW, the width and length of the oblique band; the color of this band ranges from yellow to orange; may or may not have a small yellow spot on the discal cell. DHW, the width of the yellow submarginal band between Sc+R 1 and M 2, from M 2, this band becomes rusty red and in the anal region it may merge with the general color or extend towards the basal region; the length of the band in the anal region is limited by the distal portion of the discal cell, a character easily seen in females. VFW, the width of the oblique band ( Figs 140–142 View FIGURE 140 View FIGURE 141 View FIGURE 142 ).

Comments. After examination of the type material ( Figs 155–158 View FIGURE 155 View FIGURE 156 View FIGURE 157 View FIGURE 158 ) and the variations in the color and width of the DFW and DHW bands found in a series of specimens, we maintain as synonymous with Opsiphanes quiteria meridionalis Staudinger, 1887 the following names: Opsiphanes quiteria philon Fruhstorfer, 1907 , Opsiphanes quiteria oresbios Fruhstorfer, 1912 , and Opsiphanes quiteria var. obidonoides Breyer, 1939 .

Natural history. Information on the immature stages of Opsiphanes quiteria meridionalis can be found in F. Hoffmann (1930), Monte (1934), Casagrande & O. Mielke (2005), Neves & Paluch (2016), and Orlandin et al. (2020).

Host plants: Arecaceae : Dypsis lutescens (H. Wendl.) Beentje & J. Dransf. ( Neves & Paluch 2016; Orlandin et al. 2020); Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman ( Hayward 1969; Casagrande & O. Mielke 2005; Orlandin et al. 2020); Astrocaryum aculeatissimum (Schott) Burret ( Penz et al. 1999) ; Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. , Euterpe edulis Mart. ( Orlandin et al. 2020) .

Geographic distribution. Brazil (Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo , Paraná, Santa Catarina , Rio Grande do Sul); Paraguay (no data); Argentina (Misiones) ( Fig. 148 View FIGURE 148 ), at altitudes between sea level and 1,700 m.

Temporal distribution. Throughout the year.

Etymology. Likely a reference to the geographic location of the taxon, in relation to Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria (Stoll, 1780) .
