Taxonomic history. Herbst (1793) illustrated two specimens of Opsiphanes quiteria , naming them Papilio quiterius [sic]. Papilio quiteria Stoll, 1780 was transferred to Brassolis by Hübner [1819]. Westwood (1851) considered Papilio quiteria as belonging to Opsiphanes , but as a synonym of Opsiphanes cassiae ( Linnaeus, 1758) . Later, Stichel (1902) described Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor syn. nov. and Opsiphanes quiteria bolivianus syn. nov., and in 1908 he synonymized Opsiphanes quiteria mylasa with Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor syn. nov., and Opsiphanes quiteria obidonus with Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria . The “forma principalis” of Stichel (1909) for Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria should be interpreted as a typical or main phenotype of the nominotypical subspecie. Fruhstorfer (1912) illustrated the female of Opsiphanes quiteria . Fassl (1920) mentioned Opsiphanes quiteria bolivianus syn. nov. as Opsiphanes boliviana [sic] and Köhler (1923) mentioned it as Opsiphanes bolivianus . Stichel (1932) synonymized Opsiphanes quiteria mylasa with Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor syn. nov. Blandin (1977) suggested that the name Opsiphanes quiteria should be applied only to the typical phenotype of cis-Andean South America, whose males and females have wings with yellow bands. Bristow (1991) synonymized Opsiphanes quiteria obidonus with Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria , and Opsiphanes quiteria mylasa with Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor syn. nov., a decision followed by Casagrande (2004). Gernaat et al. (2012) illustrated specimen 3 of plate 11 suggesting that it could be the “ holotype ” of Papilio quiteria Stoll, 1780 . It cannot be the holotype, as the original description mentions the male and female and Bristow (1991) had previously designated another specimen as a lectotype ( Fig. 149 View FIGURE 149 ).

Type material. Papilio quiteria Stoll, 1780 was described based on an unknown number of males and females from Suriname. Stichel (1904) referred to figures A–D of plate 313 by Stoll (1780) as “fig. Typ.”. Bristow (1991) designated a male as the lectotype, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / LECTOTYPE / Nº 21 QUITERIA Cr. IV. 313. ABCD./ [illegible]/ FELDER COLLN./ Rothschild Bequest B.M. 1939-1./.

Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor Stichel, 1902 was described based on a male [holo]type from Coca , east of the Andes, [Napo], Ecuador, 260 m, collected by R. Haensch and deposited in the Stichel collection. The [holo]type is deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Typus / Holotype / Ost-Ecuador Coca e. c. H. Stichel / O. quit . quaestor Stich. Type / Rothschild Bequest B.M. 1939-1./.

Opsiphanes quiteria bolivianus Stichel, 1902 was described based on a male [holo]type from Bolivia, deposited in the Stichel collection and currently deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Typus/ Type/ Bolivia [“Yungas d l. Paz” crossed out] e. c. H. Stichel/ O. quit . bolivianus Stich. Type/ Rothschild Bequest B. M. 1939-1./. In order to clarify the status of the type specimen, the following labels will also be attached: / HOLOTYPUS / Holotypus Opsiphanes quiteria bolivianus Stichel, 1902 , Piovesan, Casagrande & O. Mielke det. 2022/.

Opsiphanes quiteria mylasa Fruhstorfer, 1907b was described based on a single male specimen from Waupes, [Amazonas, Brazil], collected by Koch-Grünberg and currently deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Type / LECTOTYPE / Rio Uaupes Dr. Theod. Koch Coll. Frustorfer / quiteria mylasa Fruhst./ Fruhstorfer Coll. B.M. 1937-285./.

Opsiphanes quiteria obidonus Fruhstorfer, 1907b was described based on at least a male and a female from Óbidos, [Pará, Brazil], VIII-IX-1899, deposited in the Fruhstorfer collection. Bristow (1991) designated a female as the lectotype, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Type/ LECTOTYPE / Obidos Amazonenstrom VIII-IX.99. ex coll. H. Fruhstorfer/ Ops. quiteria obidonus / Fruhstorfer Coll. B.M. 1937-285./.

Opsiphanes quiteria cardenasi Bristow, 1991 was described based on the holotype female, deposited at the NHMUK, with the following labels: / Holotype / Para (A. M. Moss)./ Ops. quiteria cardenasi Bristow/ Rothschild Bequest B.M 1939-1./.

Diagnosis. Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria differs from Opsiphanes quiteria meridionalis in having the DHW with the submarginal band generally half or less the width of the DFW oblique band, and differs from Opsiphanes quiteria quirinalis in the yellow or orange color of the DFW and DHW bands ( Figs 134–139 View FIGURE 134 View FIGURE 135 View FIGURE 136 View FIGURE 137 View FIGURE 138 View FIGURE 139 ).

Variation. FW, length: male: 37–49 mm (n=8), female: 55–58 mm (n=4). DFW, the width and length of the oblique band; the color of this band ranges from pale-yellow to orange. DHW, between Sc+R 1 and M 2 with a yellow submarginal band, from evident to subtle, from M 2, this band becomes rusty red or merges with the ground color. VFW, with or without a small yellow spot on CuA 1 -CuA 2 near the discal cell; and the width and length of the oblique band, which may or may not exceed 2A ( Figs 134–139 View FIGURE 134 View FIGURE 135 View FIGURE 136 View FIGURE 137 View FIGURE 138 View FIGURE 139 ).

Comments. Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria shows marked variation in wing patterns, which may explain the number of names proposed as subspecies. Subspecies descriptions were based on characters such as the color, the width of the DFW oblique band, and the length of the DHW submarginal band. However, examination of a series of specimens from several locations revealed that many of the characters used to justify the proposed names are variable and/or appear in specimens that belong to different subspecies. Stichel (1908) drew attention to the morphological variation of Opsiphanes quiteria and emphasized throughout his study that no single one character (e. g. width of the DFW oblique band) should be considered sufficient justification to propose a species or subspecies. After examination of the type material ( Figs 149–154 View FIGURE 149 View FIGURE 150 View FIGURE 151 View FIGURE 152 View FIGURE 153 View FIGURE 154 ) and the morphological variation in a series of specimens, we consider synonymous with Opsiphanes quiteria quiteria (Stoll, 1780) the following names: Opsiphanes quiteria quaestor Stichel, 1902 syn. nov., Opsiphanes quiteria bolivianus Stichel, 1902 syn. nov., Opsiphanes quiteria mylasa Fruhstorfer, 1907 , Opsiphanes quiteria obidonus Fruhstorfer, 1907 and Opsiphanes quiteria cardenasi Bristow, 1991 syn. nov.
