Menzel (1992) placed this name as a synonym of Molendoa sendtneriana , however we disagree with this synonymy. The type material studied included two species of Didymodon mixed: D. patagonicus (Mitt.) Brotherus (1924: 273) and D. australasiae . The protologue of M. guentheri reads: "species distinctissima, foliorum forma cellulisque basilaribus laxe oblongo-rectangularibus dignoscenda, cum nulla alia commutanda". Therefore, the description provided in the protologue fits better with Didymodon australasiae and therefore it is here placed in the synonymy of that species.
