Type species: Gryllacris abbreviata Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888

Diagnosis. The genus is unique for a prolongation of the male eighth abdominal tergite that bridges both sides of the divided ninth tergite along the midline. Both parts of the divided ninth abdominal tergite terminate apically into incurved hooks. Females have the subgenital plate with slightly bilobate hind margin. The ovipositor is upcurved with subacute tip.

The genus is in urgent need of a revision. Based on the species that I have seen so far, only the typus generis belongs to the genus, all others are unrelated and should be transferred to other genera. For two of them an assignment to another genus is currently not possible: The holotype of B. crassipes ( Walker, 1859) is badly damaged including the abdominal apex, and B. punicea ( Gerstaecker, 1860) is only known from females. Four other species, Gryllacris artinii Griffini, 1913b , G. buyssoniana Griffini, 1912c , G. kurseonga Griffini, 1913b , and G. maindroni Griffini, 1913a , with the types in MNHN Paris, are better grouped with Homogryllacris since the abdominal appendages of the males arise from the tenth abdominal tergite instead of from the ninth abdominal tergite as in Brachyntheisogryllacris . All other species currently included in Brachyntheisogryllacris should be reexamined to be certain about their generic affiliation.
