Type species: Cainotherium commune Bravard, 1835 .

Diagnosis: The upper molars are quadrangular. Small diastemata between C and P1/ and between P/1 and P/2 are variably present. P2/, P/2 and P/3 are elongate. P2/ lacks a lingual cusp. The premaxilla reaches the frontal. The nasal is long, narrow and rectangular. Presence of a depression over the nose root. A long narrow crescent-shaped ethmoidal slit variably present. The opening of choanae is narrow or large. Presence or absence of a canalis alaris. The mandible is long and thin ( Berger, 1959: 39).
