Description of holotype (♂). Length: 10.2 mm, elytral width: 5.8 mm.

General appearance. Elongate, with slender legs and as in Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 A–C.

Head ( Fig. 2D View FIGURES 2 ). Black, clypeus fulvous, without chalky material. Antennae dark brown, with clubs fulvous. Clypeus glabrous, wider than long, widest at one third of apex, anterior corners rounded, anterior margin emarginate, not reflexed at centre, sparsely punctate anteriorly. Frons and vertex sparsely punctuate, glabrous. Antennal clubs long, about 1.7 times the clypeus length.

Pronotum ( Fig. 2A View FIGURES 2 ). Octagonal, slightly wider than long, moderately convex, not longitudinally hollow at cent- er of disk, sides abruptly converging anteriorly before middle, almost parallel from middle to base, widely rounded posteriorly, anterior angles obtuse, rounded at apex, posterior angles rounded and not projecting posteriorly, posterior margin broadly emarginated medially; lateral and posterior margins with narrow band of chalky material interrupted at center of posterior margin. Margins with scattered, pale yellow setae, becoming thicker near the corners; surface with thick, rounded, small punctuation, covered with black pruinosity.

Scutellum . Black, triangular, wider than long, sides arcuate, apex rounded, surface black and sparsely punctate.

Elytron ( Fig. 2A View FIGURES 2 ). Black, with reddish, narrow, longitudinal maculae on anteapical umbones. Longer than wide, widest before the middle, with seven striae, six dorsally, one on lateral declivity; with following chalky material: four rounded patches on disk, two on lateral declivity and short band in juxtascutellar part of sutura.

Pygidium ( Fig. 2E View FIGURES 2 ). Black, wider than long, shiny with apex rounded; with comma-shaped chalky patches at sides, separated dorsally from each other by narrow gap. Covered with erect, whitish setae and scattered, shallow punctuation.

Ventral side ( Fig. 2C View FIGURES 2 ). Greater part of ventral surface covered with chalky material. Anal sternites hollow at center, but still covered with chalky material.

Legs. Completely black apart from brown protarsi. Protibia bidentate, lacking terminal spur. Metatibial posterior margin with obsolete, small tooth at center. First metatarsomere slightly longer than second. Metatarsomeres with some whitish-yellow bristles tufts at apex ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 A–C).

Male genitalia. As in Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 F–H.

Allotype (♀) differs from male by the following characters ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 I–M). Length: 10.6 mm, elytral width: 5.6 mm. Slightly more robust than male and completely black, without red maculae or black pruinosity. Protibia wider than in male. Antennal club about 1.2 times the clypeus length. Pygidium with longitudinal, central, notable hollow from mid to apex ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 2 J–K and 2M), with pale yellow chalky material not covering small central transversal, carina-like area and band along posterior margin as well as apex ( Fig. 2M View FIGURES 2 ). Anal sternites not hollow medially and without pale yellow chalky material.

Type series variability. This species exhibits constant characters, but is somewhat variable in its dimensions, with body length in the range of 9.8–11.7 mm in males and 9.8–10.6 mm in females.

Distribution. Guangxi, Guizhou and Fujian provinces, China.

Etymology. From the Latin “tergorufus”, as the anteapical umbones of the male are reddish

Differential diagnosis. The only other Chinese species of Paratrichius with black colouration and red or orange-red maculae on elytra but no chalky material on disc of pronotum is Paratrichius rufescens Ma, 1990 , known from Hainan and Fujian. The male of the latter species can be separated from that of P. tergorufus new species mainly by its pygidium, which is completely covered with chalky material and effaced at apex. It also has a broad red orange band on its elytra and the antennal clubs are fulvous instead of black. The shape of its parameres is very peculiar too.

The female of P. tergorufus new species is completely black and only rarely exhibits a reddish macula around the anteapical umbones. It can easily be separated from similar species by the peculiar shape of its pygidium ( Fig. 2M View FIGURES 2 ). Paratrichius tergorufus new species could also be confused with Paratrichius hajeki Krajcik, 2010 , described from northern Vietnam but inhabiting north-eastern Laos too and potentially occurring in southern Yunnan and/or other areas of south-western China. The male of P. hajeki differs from that of P. tergorufus new species by having a black clypeus and an orange red macula on elytra, instead of red (seldom this macula is stretched forward). It also exhibits a band of chalky material along its anterior and lateral margins, which is continuos rather than interrupted at the center. The female of P. hajeki can be separated from that of P. tergorufus new species by its pygidium, which exhibits a short, narrow, longitudinal hollow at the apex, instead of a prominent longitudinal, central, hollow from mid to apex ( Fig. 2M View FIGURES 2 ).
