( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 )

Live appearance: unknown.

Adult female only available life stage.

Description of adult female, measurements taken from 4 specimens ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).

Body elongate-oval, 0.85–1.35 mm wide, 1.1–1.8 mm long; derm membranous. Eyespots not seen [specimens overcleared]. Marginal setae on abdomen 7.5–15 μm long, slightly larger than on thorax, where 5–10 μm long. Antennae 6-segmented, 65–85 μm long, segmentation as for genus. Clypeolabral shield enclosed within a wide sclerotised rim, total length 130–170 μm long, 115–168 μm wide, width of rim alone at each lateral median 30–55 μm wide; labium lying free of sclerotised rim, 42.5–60 μm long with 5 pairs of setae. Anal lobes sclerotised, short, broadly rounded at apex and recurved towards median, 55–75 μm long, 102.5–165 μm wide across both lobes together; anal lobe setae lengths (μm): LD 1 5–10, LD2 7.5–12.5; LD3 10–12.5, LV 1 10–15, apical seta 32–45; suranal seta 7.5–12.5 μm long. Anal ring ventral, with 2 rows of cells and 6 short setae, each 12.5–17.5 μm long. Legs well developed but proportionately small for body; metathoracic coxa rectangular, with rounded angles, covered with reticulate translucent pores, larger than coxae of other legs, ratio of mesocoxa to metacoxa length and width each about 1:0.83; metathoracic leg lengths (μm): coxa 25–32.5, trochanter + femur 47.5–55, tibia 20–25, tarsus 25–30, claw 7.5; claw without a denticle. Digitules of normal size and shape.

Dorsum. Dorsal setae sparse, small, 5–10 μm long, more spinose on posterior abdomen, where 7.5–12.5 μm long; with 2–4 setae per segment on submedial areas. With unique 5-locular disc pores each 5 μm wide and raised on a stalk 5–6 μm long; distributed throughout dorsum, more numerous around margin; when on anal lobes, each stalked disc pore sunken in a dermal invagination; anal lobes together with a total of 8–14 pores on dorsal surface and 2–4 pores on ventral surface. Lateral sclerotised lobules present on margin of posterior 3 free abdominal segments, decreasing in size anteriorly; largest lateral lobule a convoluted, raised area penultimate to anal lobes on segment VII, 45–65 μm wide (transversely), 30–37.5 μm long; next anterior lobule on segment VI intermediate in structure, 22.5–50 μm wide, 12.5–27.5 long; smallest lobule on segment V a lightly sclerotised patch; each lateral lobule with 3–4 stout setae and 3–4 stalked disc pores. Microtubular ducts minute, 3 present on each posterior lateral lobule, (not observed on other lobules).

Venter. Ventral abdominal setae lanceolate, 7.5–15 μm long, with about 4 per row on abdominal segments; with 3–4 pairs of flagellate interantennal setae, 7.5–22.5 μm long. Ventral stalked 5-locular disc pores as on dorsum, in a submarginal band extending to near antennae on head. Stalked disc pores forming an outer row of 8–13 pores by each spiracle, with an inner group of 6–11 smaller stalked disc pores near peritreme; mesothoracic spiracle length 40–50 μm, width across peritreme 7.5 μm; metathoracic spiracle length 17.5–25 μm, width across peritreme 7.5 μm. Microtubular ducts and macrotubular ducts absent. Vulva a wide slit without sclerotised margins, between abdominal segments V and VI.

Comment. Diagnostic features of adult female as for genus.

Type material. Holotype female: NEW ZEALAND, FD, Resolution I, Disappointment Cove, 23 May 1982, CF Butcher, under moss on log, NZAC #82-187f/1, holotype female is the smaller of 2 females on the slide.

Paratypes: as for holotype, #82-187f/1: 1/2FF: paratype is the larger female on slide with holotype female; #82-187f/2–3: 2/4FF; as previous except under mosses on wood, #82-187e/1–3: 3/6FF.

Etymology. The specific epithet hippodamus , from the Greek horse-taming, refers to the horse collarshaped rim surrounding the mouthparts of this scale.
