Blarinomys breviceps (Winge 1887)

[Oxymycterus] breviceps Winge 1887 , E Museo Lundii, Vol. 1, 3: 34.

Type Locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais, Rio das Velhas, Pleistocene cave deposits near Lagoa Santa.

Vernacular Names: Blarinine Akodont.

Distribution: Atlantic Forest region of SE Brazil (Bahia to São Paulo; Silva et al., 2003) and NE Argentina (Misiones Prov.; Massoia, 1993).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Based on compilation of old and new records, Silva et al. (2003) suggested that B. breviceps is extinct at the type locality, now set within Cerrado vegetation, and confined to the more mesic Atlantic Forest zone. See Matson and Abravaya (1977, Mammalian Species, 74).
