Diagnostic characters:—Rhizome short, tuberlike, woody, oblique rootstock bearing elongated, fibrous roots, occasionally with fleshy stoloniferous.

Distribution and habitat:— Sanicula orthacantha var. orthacantha is widely distributed in China (Anhui, Chongqing, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Zhejiang), and Vietnam (Fig. 17). It grows on mountain slopes under forest or along ravine, stream at elevations of 600‒2140 m above sea level. It was recorded occur in Cambodia, India, Laos ( Sheh & Phillippe 2005), but we have not as yet seen any material from these countries.

Phenology:—Flowering and fruits from March to October.

Lectotypification:— Sanicula petagnioides was described on the basis of three collections, namely T. Kawakami & U. Mori 1988, T. Kawakami & U. Mori 2026, and G. Nakahara s.n. We have been able to trace three specimens of later two collections at TAIF (Fig. 3) and TI. All these specimens match well the protologue and are syntypes as Hayata (1908) did not designated a type for S. petagnioides . According to ICN Art. 9.11 ( Turland et al. 2018), here we designate T. Kawakami & U. Mori 2026 (TAIF18726; Fig. 3A), which is well preserved completely, as lectotype.

Notes:— In the protologue of Sanicula henryi, Wolff (1913) stated the collection A. Henry 10500 was preserved in B. However, it has most likely been destroyed during World War II. Another five duplicates are kept at E, K, MO, NY and US, respectively, and all well preserved and also agree with the original description. Pimenov (2017) designated K sheet as its lectotype, and the sheets at E, MO, NY and US are isolectotypes. According to ICN Art. 9.3 ( Turland et al. 2018), we accept the opinion of Pimenov (2017).
