Cytaea laticeps ( Thorell, 1878) View in CoL

Figs 1–14 View FIGURES 1 – 14

Plexippus laticeps Thorell 1878: 247 –251 (1♂ syntype from Amboina, the Moluccas, O. Beccari, MCSN, examined, here designed as lectotype; 2♂, 3♀, syntypes, same data as lectotype, examined, here designed as paralectotypes). Cytaea latifrons: Simon 1903: 815 –816 (lapsus).

Cytaea laticeps: Prószyński 1984: 27 View in CoL , 29.

Additional material examined. THE MOLUCCAS, Amboina , 1♂, 1♀, nr 1772, NHRS-KASI 21, SMNH.

Diagnosis. Embolus long, making one and a half coils, arising from embolic disc at 6 o'clock ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). The plane of the spiral of embolus is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bulb. The epigyne with large windows occupying much more than 1/2 of epigynal plate, and with copulatory openings located at postero-lateral part of the window ( Figs 13–14 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). The males differ from those of C. ponapensis Berry, Beatty & Prószyński, 1998 by smaller tegular lobe and smaller retrolateral seminal duct loop, while the females by the medial position of the copulatory openings, and the relatively shorter copulatory ducts.

Description. Male lectotype. Cephalothorax high, pale brown, covered with white scales, more numerous on the sides ( Figs 1, 3 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Eye field light brown, wider than long (its length 43% of CL). PME halfway between PLE and ALE. Fovea short, located between PLE. Clypeus pale brown, narrower (38%) than AME diameter ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ), covered with one narrow white and brown belts of scales under AME. Chelicerae short, rectangular, slightly projected, brown, lighter apically and prolaterally, covered with long, white scales at the base. Promargin with six teeth, retromarginal tooth bicuspid ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Endites and labium slender, not distinctive, pale yellow, with lighter chewing margins. Sternum longer than wide, whitish ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Abdomen elongate, pale, covered with sparse, brown hairs and scales ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Spinnerets pale yellow. Venter whitish with greyish brown median stripes ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Pedipalps pale yellow, RTA wider at the base, convolute ( Figs 8–10 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Legs I pale orange, coxae/patellae ventrally slightly lighter. Other legs yellowish, lighter ventrally, with numerous spines. Leg formula: III-IV-I-II. Dimensions: CL 2.40, CW 1.85, AEW 1.70, PEW 1.70, EFL 1.05, CH 1.23, AL 2.35, AW 1.10.

Female paralectotype. Cephalothorax brown, covered with white scales, more numerous at the eye field and at the sides ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Eye field wider than long, its length 38% of CL. PME halfway between PLE and ALE. Thorax with indistinct lines radiating from fovea. Abdomen elongate, yellowish, covered with sparse brown hairs and dark orange scales. Spinnerets yellow. Clypeus pale, narrower (29%) than AME diameter, covered with sparse white scales ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Chelicerae short, rectangular, slightly projected, orange. Promargin with six teeth, retromarginal tooth bicuspid. Endites and labium brown, pale on the sides, sternum yellowish. Venter yellowish, with two longitudinal greyish stripes. Epigyne window oval, separated by median septum ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Copulatory openings widely separate from each other, accessory glands easily visible ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 1 – 14 ). Spermathecae ovoid, situated posterior to translucent window. Legs I brown, stronger than the other. Other legs light brown with tibiae and patellae lighter. Leg formula: III-IV-I-II. Dimensions: CL 2.60, CW 2.25, AEW 2.05, PEW 2.05, EFL 1.30, CH 1.30, AL 3.10, AW 1.75.
