Homoneura variipennis Czerny, 1933: 231 View in CoL . Type locality: Russia (Amur); Shatalkin, 2000: 28.

Translation of the German original description. Head about 4.0 times as high as long in lateral view. Frons black, except for brownish yellow on anterior margin and to lateral margin near eye, with yellowish gray pruinosity and a brownish yellow median stripe. Fronto–facial angle blunt. Face and gena brownish yellow with grayish pruinosity. Gena about 1/5 height of eye, with a black spot near anterior margin. Eye vertically oval. Antenna brownish yellow, except for base of 1st flagellomere pale brown; arista short pubescent. Occiput grayish, except for outer margin and lower part brownish yellow.

Thorax yellowish gray. Female mesonotum with 4 brown stripes, two long middle stripes extending beyond scutoscutellar suture and two short lateral stripes situated behind transverse suture; 1+2 dc, acr in 6 rows. Postpronotum brownish yellow. Leg brownish yellow. Mid tibia with 2 pv; hind femur without setula on ventral surface. Wing grayish with brown spots; an elliptical apical spot, a quadrate subapical spot and an elliptical spot present at middle between r-m and dm-cu on R4+5; an elliptical apical spot on R2+3 confluent with a quadrate subapical spot on R4+5; an elliptical apical spot on M1, ultimate section as long as distance between r-m and dm-cu on M1; a narrow brown stripe on r-m and dm-cu; subcostal cell brown. Halter yellow.

Abdomen grayish black, male tergites without spots and female tergites each with a pair of brownish yellow spots on anterior lateral corners.

This species is very similar to Homoneura pictipennis Czerny, 1932 View in CoL . Type specimens including 1 3 and 1 Ƥ (body size 3 mm, locality: Amur) deposited in the Zoological Institute in Halle, Saale (Collector Viktor von Röder). Remarks. The type specimens were not found in the Zentralmagazin Naturwissenschaftlicher Sammlungen, Halle (Saale), Germany (ZNS), and are maybe lost. The above translation is provided as an aid to recognizing this species given the absence of the types.
