Ephedrus longiarticulatus Rakhshani & Tomanovi ć sp. n.

Diagnosis. E. longiarticulatus sp. n. belongs to the lacertosus species group, a classification based on its long flagellomere I and elongated stigma of the forewing. This species is morphologically close to Ephedrus lacertosus (Haliday) from which it can be distinguished by the length ratio of 3-SR/2-SR (1.20–1.30 in E. longiarticulatus sp. n. vs. 0.90–1.20 in E. lacertosus ) and SR1/3-SR (1.80–1.90 in E. longiarticultus sp. n. vs. 1.90–2.30 in E. lacertosus ), the tentorial index (0.60–0.70 in E. longiarticulatus sp. n. vs. 0.45–0.55 in E. lacertosus ), the absence of central carinae on the petiole, and a more elongated ovipositor sheath. The new species is also similar to Ephedrus longistigmus Gärdenfors in its very long and slender stigma and stout petiole, but it can be distinguished from the latter species by the absence of longitudinal placodes on flagellomere I and scattered number of setae on the eyes. E. longiarticulatus sp. n. can be differentiated from E. himalayensis Gärdenfors and Ephedrus trichosiphoniellae Takada by its longer flagellomere I (F1 l/w: 6.50–7.25 in E. longiarticulatus sp. n. vs. 3.50–4.40 in E. himalayensis and 4.50–5.00 in E. trichosiphoniellae ). E. longiarticulatus sp. n. can also be differentiated from E. himalayensis by its almost hairless eyes and stouter ovipositor sheath. According to key to the females of Palaearctic Ephedrus species by Gardenfors (1986), E. longiarticulatus sp. n. could be keyed between couplets 6 and 7.

Etymology. The name of the new species is derived from the shape of the flagellar segments.

Description. Female. Head: ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) as wide as mesosoma at tegulae. Eyes small, sparsely setose in lower part, very slightly converging toward clypeus. Malar space equal to 0.35–0.40 times of longitudinal eye diameter. Clypeus oval, bearing 9–11 long setae ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ). Tentorial index (tentoriocular line/ intertentorial line) 0.60–0.70. Face with several medium sized setae at lateral parts with a narrow bare middle line. Antennae ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) 11-segmented, long, filiform, 0.70–0.75 of body length, with elongated flagellar segments shortening toward tip. Flagellomere I (F1) very long 6.50–7.00 times as long as median width, without longitudinal placodes. F2 ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) is 3.60–4.00 times as long as median width, with 2–3 longitudinal placodes. F1 1.50–1.60 time as long as F2. Flagellar segments with semierected long setae, as long as or a little longer than the diameter of the segments ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ). Maxillary palpi 4- segmented, labial palpi 2-segmented ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ).

Mesosoma: Mesonotum ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) with crenulated notaulices distinct in the ascending fore part, effaced gradually on disc, visible till half of mesonotum. Two rows of long setae along the trace of notaulices and a few more at posterior part. No mesoscutal fovea present. Scutellum bearing 8–10 medium sized setae at dorsal part. Propodeum ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) with small central pentagonal areola. Each external and dentiparal areola with 6 and 4 long setae, respectively.

Forewing: Stigma extremely elongated ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ). The length/wide ratio of stigmal shaft 3.00–3.50; length ratio of 3-SR/2-SR 1.20–1.30, SR1/3-SR 1.80–1.90 and 3-SR/r-m 1.70–1.90. r vein long, slightly shorter than stigma width. Lower margin of forewing with long setae.

Metasoma: Petiole ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ) elongated, 1.90–2.10 times as long as wide at spiracles, dorso-lateral carinae distinct, central carinae absent. Postero-lateral excavations weak, with 3–4 long setae. Ovipositor sheath elongated with a weak sub-apical constriction ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 16 ), bearing 5–6 setae both along upper and lower margins. Length of ovipositor sheath 3.60–4.00 times as long as its maximum width at base and 7.50–8.00 time as long as its minimum width at tip.

Colour: General body colour dark brown. Head dark brown. Mouthparts light brown, except brown tip of mandible. Eyes black, the area surrounding the ocelli dark brown. Scape and pedicel light brown. Flagellomere I light brown, darkening at the tip, remaining flagellar segments brown to dark brown. Wings slightly infumated, venations brown. Legs yellow with dark apices. Coxae and femurs slightly darker, metasoma and petiole brown, other metasomal segments slighly darker than petiole. Ovipositor sheath yellowish.

Body length 2.60–3.10 mm.

Male. Generally similar morphology as female. Coloration similar to female, but slightly darker.

Body length 2.40–3.00 mm.
