Basionym: Graphis macella Krempelhuber View in CoL , Flora 59: 380 (1876) ≡ Graphina macella (Kremp.) Müller Arg. (1880: 23) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro state: ad ramulos Velloziae [Villosiae], Glaziou 6289 (M, holotype, G!, isotype).
Fig. 2F View FIGURE 2 .
Thallus corticolous, whitish to gray, surface smooth to uneven, mostly glossy, partly dull. Lirellae prominent, with basally to laterally thick, apically very thin complete thalline margin, proper exciple still visible, elongate, up to 3 mm long, straight or curved, usually unbranched, labia convergent, distinctly striate, dark gray, not pruinose, disc closeded (acharii- morph). Exciple completely carbonized, hymenium clear. Ascospores 1/ascus, hyaline, densely muriform, 70–95 × 18–30 μm, not halonate, I+ blue; 66–68 × 17–19 μm (protologue); 65–130 × 20–40 μm ( Wirth & Hale 1978).
Chemistry: no lichen substances by TLC (anal. K. Kalb).
Distribution and habitat:—Probably pantropical, reported from Brazil, (type locality), Mexico ( Wirth & Hale 1978), Uruguay, and Africa: Kenya (hb. K. Kalb 36482 and 13150) and here for the first time for the eastern Palaeotropics in Thailand, where it was growing in a palm tree plantation at 20 m elevation.
Remarks:—Thallus and lirellae of our material are somewhat aberrant. The thallus is very thin, causing a similar thin thalline cover of the lirellae which is only present on a few ascomata. Furthermore, many lirellae are not growing directly on the thallus, but on old ascomata, making them to be prominent to sessile. Aside from these anomalies, a few lirellae show a ± typical habitus so that we have no doubt about the correct identification.
Material from Thailand examined:— Ranong province: Area of Ban Heownumsai along side road from Phetkasem Road ( Road #4) to Ton Petch Waterfall ( Rainbow Waterfall ), ca. 30 km S of Ranong City , in a palm tree plantation, 20 m, 09°43’28’’ N, 98°36’52’’ E, 6 June 2015, J.
