Genus Japoniae et Americae boreo-occidentalis ab Iride s. str. bene distinctus et valde differt rhizomate tenuissimo, longo, valde ramoso, ramis funiculiformibus, nodosis, ad nodos incrassatis et plerumque radicantibus; foliis herbaceis, mollibus linearibusque; floribus terminalibus, tubo perigonii breve, cylindrico, ad faucem dilatato, exterioribus segmentis perigonii majoribus, erecto-patentibus, emarginatis, crista unica centrali prominente, integra vel irregulariter erosa, interioribus patentibus vel subpatentibus, minoribus, a basi breve unguiculato-canaliculatis; stigmatibus quam segmentis exterioribus dimidio brevioribus; capsula ovoidea vel subglobosa, subcoriacea, costis parce prominulis, oscure trigona, e apice deorsum a medio valde dehiscente; seminibus angulosis, compressis, minute foveolatis, rhaphide albicante vel lutescente instructis. Numerus basicus chromosomatum, p = 7. Nomen genericum a Georgi Ivanovich Rodionenko (1913–2014) ex animo dicatum.

Rhizomatous herbs, with deciduous aerial structures. Rhizome very slender, long, heterogeneous, with cord-like branches at apex, swollen at nodes, clothed with brown, scale-like leaves; roots fibrous or somewhat fleshy, sometimes arising from nodes. Stems aerial, elongated, simple or 1–3-branched, solid, ± rounded in cross section. Leaves isobilateral, herbaceous, narrowly linear, without prominent ribs, not fetid; caulinar well-developed, equitant. Flowers terminal on branches, shortly pedicellate. Spathe valves 1–2, ± scarious except the base and the midrib, ± keeled, sometimes fused basally. Perigone in 2 rows, differing in size and shape, fused in a short cylindric tube, widened at the apex; falls erect-patent, oblong-spatulate, slightly reflexed towards apex, deeply emarginate, gradually tapering into a short claw, with a central ridge, almost entire or irregularly wavy; standards patent to erecto-patent, oblanceolate-spatulate, narrowed into a short canaliculate haft. Stamen filaments free, adnate to the fall bases. Ovary trilocular, with axile placentation. Style filiform, with 3 petaloid branches, about half longer than falls, each one concealing a stamen; crests short, incurved, broadly obovate, irregularly fringed on margins; stigma oblong to triangular-acuminate, entire. Capsule depressed-globose to ovoid, without prominent ribs, subtrigonous, dehiscing from apex to about middle, usually not hidden into spathes, unbeaked; pericarp subcoriaceous. Seeds numerous, angulose, flattened, with whitish to yellowish raphe; testa surface pitted. p = 7. Figs. 2K View FIGURE 2 , 5K View FIGURE 5 , 6N View FIGURE 6 , 25C. View FIGURE 25
