scientific name

Syncarpha vestita (L.) B. Nord.
status

Xeranthemum variegatum Linnaeus , Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 546. 1767.

RCN: 6205.

Type not designated.

Original material: none traced.

Current name: Syncarpha vestita (L.) B. Nord. ( Asteraceae ).

Note: This is either a later usage, or a later homonym, of X. variegatum P.J. Bergius (1767) . Linnaeus does not cite Bergius’ account, but both names have a Ray reference in common in their synonymies. However, Bergius’ name also has Breyn and Petiver illustrations cited in its synonymy, and its diagnosis is not identical to that used by Linnaeus. It nevertheless seems unlikely that Bergius and Linnaeus would independently have chosen the same name for different taxa.
