CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Xanthogramma pedissequum (Harris, 1776) ( Peck 1988: 52) ; valid species, as Xanthogramma dives ( Belcari et al. 1995a: 8, Speight & Sommaggio 2010: 140, Nedeljković et al. 2018: 9).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 136) described Syrphus dives without specifying the number, the sex or the length of the specimens he had collected and also received from V. Pecchioli and L. Bellardi. Christian Kassebeer examined the MZUF type material, adding the label “ lectotype ” under one male, without formally publishing a lectotype designation ( Speight & Sommaggio 2010: 140). Speight & Sommaggio (2010: 141) designated as lectotype the male previously labeled as such by Kassebeer, without including the four specimens (one male and three females) labeled as paralectotypes by Kassebeer because they “seem to include more than one species” (all are paralectotypes). Speight & Sommaggio (2010: 140) did not mention an additional five specimens: two in the MZUF, two in the MSNC and one in the MSNPV (all are paralectotypes).
