ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1845f: 257 (key), 261 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Sicilia [Sicily ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (missing head and right fore-leg, thorax partially eaten by dermestids, terminalia in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 2): Merodon Fb. Latr. / subfasciatus Rnd. , ♂, Sicil. / 59 / Merodon cinereus Fabr. , det. Hurkmans, 1987.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Merodon cinereus ( Fabricius, 1794) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 168, Belcari et al. 1995a: 16).
REMARKS: Rondani (1845f: 261) described Merodon subfasciatus from a single male: “ è una specie che formo sopra un solo individuo … Questo esemplare è maschio [I described this species from a single specimen … This specimen is a male]”, received from M. Spinola. The MZUF contains an additional female numbered “59” received later from L. Bellardi ( Rondani 1857: 58).
