ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 196.

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (missing left mid- and right fore-legs) ( MZUF: Box 64): Piotepalpus Rndn. / hirtipes Rndn. , Parma / 3292.

CURRENT STATUS: nomen dubium View in CoL in Cordyla Meigen, 1803 View in CoL (Hackman in Hackman et al. 1988: 311).

REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 196) key for the genus Piotepalpus Rondani, 1856 lists Piotepalpus hirtipes as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex of the specimens. We found one syntype in this study. O’Hara et al. (2011: 210) listed this nominal species as “ hitripes ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling.
