Phycodromya meridionalis Rondani, 1866 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866d: 48 [1867b: 132].
TYPE LOCALITY: “ ad littora Melitae [coast of Malta]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, 1 ♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 28): Phycodromya Rndn. / meridionalis Rndn. , Melita / 1478 .
CURRENT STATUS: subspecies of Malacomyia sciomyzina (Haliday, 1833) ( Gorodkov 1984a: 150, Mathis & McAlpine 2011: 195).
REMARKS: Rondani (1866d: 48) described Phycodromya meridionalis from a single male and a single female: “ Specimen utriusque sexus … capta a Doct. Schembri possideo [I have a specimen from both sexes … collected by Dr. Schembri] ”. Rondani published the species first in a separate (1866d) and then in the journal version (1867b). We found both syntypes in this study. This nominal species was described under the generic name “ Phycodromya ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Phycodroma Stenhammar, 1854 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 144).
