This small family of acalyptrate flies contains 34 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1866d) described one Palaearctic species, currently considered a subspecies ( Gorodkov 1984 a, Mathis & McAlpine 2011) in his “ Stirps Scatophaginae ”. The family Coelopidae was proposed by Hendel (1910a). The type material is in the MZUF.
