TYPE LOCALITY: “ De Cuba [ Cuba]” ( Macquart 1838b: 89) [locality for Mallophora scopifer Wiedemann, 1828 sensu Macquart, 1838 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (antennae partially destroyed) ( MNHN: Macquart’s Collection): Mallophora Wied. / M. scopifer Wied. , Cuba / MNHN, Paris ED 7861 / Cub [= Cuba] / 189 35 / S60; 1 ♀, syntype (missing head and all legs except left mid-leg, thorax partially eaten by dermestids) ( MNHN: Macquart’s Collection): Mallophora Wied. / M. scopifer Wied., Cub [= Cuba] / MNHN, Paris ED 7862 / Mallophora lugubris / Guérin Méneville; 1 ♀, syntype (slightly covered with mold, antennae partially destroyed) ( MNHN: Macquart’s Collection): Mallophora Wied. / M. scopifer var. / Cub [= Cuba] / MNHN, Paris ED 7863 / Cub [= Cuba] / 189 35 / S60.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 75, Artigas & Angulo 1980: 77, Artigas & Papavero 1997: 105, Papavero 2009: 40 [all as “ macquarti ”]); junior primary homonym of Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1848 and senior (but invalid) synonym of Mallophora scopipeda Rondani, 1863 (new synonymy, this work). REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 367) proposed Mallophora macquartii for Mallophora scopifer ( Wiedemann, 1828) sensu Macquart (1838b: 89) , which he considered a new species. Osculati (1850: 240) had previously listed Mallophora macquartii but did not describe the species. Later Rondani (1863: 46) proposed the replacement name Mallophora scopipeda for Mallophora scopifer ( Wiedemann, 1828) sensu Macquart , even though he did not specify this, he had already used the name Mallophora macquartii (Rondani, 1848) . Osten Sacken (1891: 420), Kertész, K. (1909a: 212), Martin & Papavero (1970: 75) and Artigas & Angulo (1980: 77) incorrectly considered Mallophora scopipeda as a junior synonym of Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1851 . Artigas & Papavero (1997: 105) and Papavero (2009: 40, 42) incorrectly considered Mallophora scopipeda and Mallophora macquartii as different valid species. O’Hara et al. (2011: 211) incorrectly considered Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1848 and Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1851 as the same nominal species. We consider Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1851 as a primary junior homonym of Mallophora macquartii Rondani 1848 and a senior synonym of Mallophora scopipeda Rondani , new synonymy (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 53.3). Osten Sacken (1891: 420), Curran (1930: 12), Martin & Papavero (1970: 75), Artigas & Angulo (1980: 77), Artigas & Papavero (1997: 105) and Papavero (2009: 40) used the subsequent spelling “ macquarti ”, but the correct name is Mallophora macquartii (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 33.4). Artigas & Angulo (1980: 77), thinking that Rondani’s types had been lost, incorrectly designated a neotype for Mallophora macquartii . Artigas & Papavero (1997: 105) and Papavero (2009: 34) incorrectly reported the type material in the MZUN. Three syntypes of Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1851 are in Macquart’s collection (MNHN) (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020).
