Aspidontus taeniatus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1836) —False cleanerfish

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS, CAS and WAM material (AMS I.17082-027; CAS 65676; WAM P.30617-004).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa east to Marshall and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia. Found in coral reefs, 1– 25 m. Marine.

Atrosalarias holomelas (Günther, 1872) —Black coral blenny

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Atrosalarias fuscus holomelas by Allen & Erdmann (2012: 801). Specimens collected at St. CTR 14; specimens collected by W.-J. Chen, St. PD-31. MNHN, NTUM, SMF and USNM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Marshall and Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary among branching corals, 1– 20 m. Marine.

Found on coastal reef flats with rich coral and algae habitats, also on rocky and coralline structures, among Acropora and Pocillopora corals of surf-swept algal ridge, 0– 14 m. Marine.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East and western Mascarenes east to Line and Marquesas islands, north to Philippines, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Found in coral reefs, from clear coastal to outer reef walls, usually where currents are moderate, 1– 40 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen in Madang Bay. AMS material (AMS I.16671-040).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, Comores and western Mascarenes east to Mariana Islands and Tonga, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef ( Australia) and New Caledonia.

Found among coral and rubble on reef flats and upper portion of seaward reefs, including tidal pools, 0– 10 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. Originally described from Madang by Smith-Vaniz (1976: 93, fig. 142). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 16, CTR 26. ANSP, CAS and USNM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Endemic to Papua New Guinea. Cheilodipterus parazonatus (Apogonidae) is a mimic of this species. Found in lagoon reefs, 5– 22 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens collected at St. CTR 0 5. SMF material (SMF 34872).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Seychelles and western Mascarenes; Caroline Islands and eastern Australia east to Marshall Islands and Henderson ( Pitcairn Group), north to southern Taiwan, south to Loyalty islands ( New Caledonia) and Tonga. Found in surge areas of exposed outer reef flats and seaward reefs, 0– 5 m. Marine.
