Genus Trypanosyllis Claparède, 1864 View in CoL

Trypanosyllis Claparède, 1864: 558 View in CoL .

Parautolytus Pillai, 1965: 123 View in CoL .

Diagnosis. Medium to large sized body, ribbon-like, dorso-ventrally flattened, with numerous short segments. Dorsum with transverse bands of minute spinose papillae on some species, only distinct under SEM. Prostomium with 4 eyes and 3 antennae. Palps completely free. Two pairs of tentacular (peristomial) cirri. Antennae and tentacular and dorsal cirri articulated. Pharynx provided with trepan, with or without mid-dorsal tooth. Compound chaetae with falcigerous blades, with simple dorsal and ventral capillary chaetae. Pygidium with 2 articulated anal cirri. Reproduction by means of Tetraglene stolons.

Type-species. Syllis zebra Claparède, 1864 .

Remarks. Parautolytus Pillai, 1965 agrees with Trypanosyllis , and the type-species, Parautolytus luzonensis Pillai, 1965 with Trypanosyllis zebra . Types of Parautolytus Ehlers, 1900 are lost and there is nothing in Ehler’s description which suggests that the genus belongs in the Autolytinae , according to Nygren (2004); and as the diagnosis is largely incomplete and inadequate, we consider Parautolytus Ehlers, 1900 as a nomen nudum.
