Remarks. This species was also considered by Verhoeff (1937) as closely related to O. scabricauda and Bücherl (1943) thought that O. demelloi was a synonym of O. scabricauda . The two species are distinguished by the length of the digitiform appendix, the presence of lateral depressions in the tergites and the coloration. In O. demelloi the digitiform appendix is shorter than in O. scabricauda , where it is equal to or longer than the prefemur; lateral depressions and margination from tergite 3 in O. demelloi , but from tergite 5 in O. scabricauda . The color of O. demelloi is metallic violet, while in O. scabricauda it is olive green. The most remarkable character in O. demelloi is the location of the tuft of hairs at the tip of the digitiform appendix that presents an oblique section in which the tuft of hairs is accommodated. The morphology of the tip as well as the position of the tuft of hairs are different from all other species of Otostigmus with a digitiform appendix. The length of the digitiform appendix in O. demelloi is similar to the length in O. rex , but the position of the tuft of hairs is different.
