Type Locality: Perú, Junín Dept., Junín.

Vernacular Names: Ornate Akodont.

Synonyms: Abrothrix bacchante (Thomas 1902) ; Abrothrix cayllomae (Thomas 1901) ; Abrothrix cruceri (Thomas 1901) ; Abrothrix inambarii (Thomas 1901) ; Abrothrix inornatus (Thomas 1917) ; Abrothrix ochrotis (Sanborn 1947) ; Abrothrix pulcherrimus (Thomas 1897) ; Abrothrix pyrrhotis ( Thomas 1894) ; Abrothrix scalops (Thomas 1884) ; Abrothrix sodalis (Thomas 1913) .

Distribution: Altiplano, about 2200-5000 m, from C Perú (see Arana-Cardó and Ascorra, 1994) to W Bolivia and NW Argentina.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc) as Chroeomys jelskii .

Discussion: Revised by Sanborn (1947 b); Anderson (1997) observed Sanborn’s subspecific boundaries for Bolivian samples. Patton and Smith (1992) questioned whether chromatically highly differentiated northern and southern populations really belong to a single species.
