Coccus narcodes Anderson, 1788a: 2 , 4; 1788b: 25, 26; Signoret, 1877: 621; Fernald, 1903: 326.
14 Anderson described this insect as`I ®nd ... and on a Tree which is very common here named Wodier by the Tamuls, some of the Branches are covered with a very Torpid Coccus Insect View in CoL , to which I have given the Speci®c name Narcodes. It was at listed by Anderson (1788a: 4) as`The Coccus Narcodes View in CoL , on the Wodier ’.
The wodier tree is currently known as Lannea coromandelica and Anderson may have been referring to the mealybug known today as Planococcoides robustus Ezzat of and McConnell, recorded from India on this plant. Although the correct identity of C. narcodes is impossible to determine from such a brief description, the name probably refers to a mealybug of the family Pseudococcidae . It should remain under its original name.
