Bagdadia View in CoL species (Hainan)

( Figs. 1, 3 View FIGURES 1 − 5 )

Material examined. CHINA, Hainan Province: 1 ♂, Yajia, Mt. Bawang, Changjiang County, 245 m, 8.v.2013, leg. Yinghui Sun, Wei Guan and Tengteng Liu, genitalia slide no. YMQ13097.

Adult ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 − 5 ). Wingspan 9.0 mm. Head grayish brown, with some grayish white scales. Labial palpus with second segment brown on outer surface, covered with black scales, grayish white distally, inner surface grayish white, ventral surface of second segment with triangular scale tuft; third segment longer than second, grayish white, with brown strips at base, 1/3 and 2/3, apex brown. Antenna alternately gray and brown. Thorax and tegula grayish brown, mixed with black and grayish white scales. Forewing long and narrow, with costal and posterior margins nearly parallel; ground colour yellowish brown, sprinkled with black scales, brown at base, small black scale tuft near base; costal margin with scale tufts at 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 respectively, first one largest, third one smallest, yellowish brown on inside, outside black; black dash oblique to outside between second and third scale tuft, black blotch near apex of second; wide black band at 1/3 extending from posterior margin to costal margin, large irregular black blotch at 2/3 near posterior margin; cilia gray. Hindwing and cilia gray. Legs grayish white, densely with black scales on outer surface, hind tibia covered with pale yellow hairs dorsally.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 − 5 ). Uncus corona-shaped, posterior margin convex at middle, laterally with two strong spines and some setae. Gnathos slender, bent at middle, hooked, expanded distally. Tegumen long, anterior margin deeply concaved. Valva long and narrow, gently S-shaped, slightly expended distally. Valvella slender, 1/3 length of valva, excurved at 2/3. Vinculum with posterior margin M-shaped at middle. Saccus wide at basal half, distal 3/ 5 slender, apex rounded. Aedeagus inflated in basal 1/4, bent at basal 1/4, distal 3/4 straight, apex blunt.

Remarks. This species closely resembles Bagdadia paroctas (Meyrick) in male genitalia, but can be separated from the latter by following characters: gnathos expanded distally, valva only gently curved once in basal half, valvella about 1/3 length of valva and excurved at 2/3. In B. paroctas , gnathos pointed distally, valva curved twice in basal half, valvella inconspicuous. The obvious differences should exclude the possibility of species variation, and suggest that this is a distinct species in the genus Bagdadia . But we refrain from formally naming it for just a single specimen.
