Classificatory history.
This monotypic tribe has been enigmatic in its placement in Curculionidae since the description of its sole genus by Chevrolat in 1879. Trichodocerus Chevrolat, 1879 was originally considered by Chevrolat to be near Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 and it has since been treated as or had its species described in the Cryptorhynchinae (Champion 1906: 713, Hustache 1936, Papp 1979, O’Brien and Wibmer 1982, Wibmer and O’Brien 1986, Zherikhin and Gratshev 1995), Baridinae ( Bondar 1946) and Conoderinae ( Wibmer and O’Brien 1989: 15, Wolda et al. 1998, Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal 1999, Lyal et al. 2006, Bouchard et al. 2011, Prena et al. 2014), where it currently resides.
