scientific name

Vicia sativa L. subsp. nigra Ehrh.
status

Vicia sativa Linnaeus var. angustifolia Linnaeus , Flora Suecica, ed. 2: 255. 1755.

RCN: 5415.

Replaced synonym of: Vicia sativa L. var. nigra L. (1763) , nom. illeg.

Lectotype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): [icon] " Vicia angustifolia " in Rivinus, Ordo Pl. Fl. Tetrapetal.: t. 55. 1691. - Epitype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 483. 1997): Sweden. Skåne: Tjörnarp sn 400m NO kvarnen, RUBIN 3D 2c 07 47, 10 Jun 1992, S. Karlsson 921771 (LD).

Current name: Vicia sativa L. subsp. nigra Ehrh. ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).

Note: Verdcourt (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae 4: 1069. 1971) indicated a Haller specimen (P) as the lectotype. However, this cannot be regarded as relevant original material because Linnaeus is not known to have studied Haller’s herbarium. Vicia sativa var. nigra is nomenclaturally superfluous under Arts 52.1 & 52.2, because Linnaeus included in its protologue all the material eligible as the lectotype of the earlier var. angustifolia (i.e. Rivinus’ illustration). The current name, V. sativa subsp. nigra Ehrh. , is therefore to be treated as a nomen novum, rather than a new combination, based on the same type as var. nigra (Art. 58.1).
