Watson (1893) fixed P. laufella as the type species for this genus, when he established the genus Pteroteinon . There are ten species of this Afrotropical genus, which is restricted to West and central Africa ( Larsen 2005, Vande weghe 2009). All reported food plants are palms, and P. laufella is a recognised minor pest in West Africa.
