4. Weissia controversa Hedw., Sp. Musc. Frond. 67. 1801 ( Hedwig 1801).

Type:—Lipsiae ad rivulum post collem Bienitz. Humo theca loca, nec non sabulosa, uda, praeprimis regionum montosarum amat (holotype lost while on loan B).

= Weissia pabstiana Müll.Hal., Bot. Zeitung. Berlin 15: 382. 1857 ( Müller 1857), syn. nov. Type:— BRASIL. Santa Catharina : locis umbrosis solo limoso ad vias cavas prope Desterro, Pabst s.n. (isotype NY!).

Note:— Weissia controversa is widespread in the world ( Zander 1993), and in Brazil occurs in the Atlantic rainforest, Savanna and Steppe, also in disturbed areas (pastures, bare soil, along road banks, etc.), 0-900 m. According to the actual distribution in the country is expected its occurrence in another states of southeastern region (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro) .

Weissia controversa presenting leaves short - to long - lanceolate, base ovate, shoulders weak or absent, apex plane to channeled, acute, margins incurved or enrolled when dry; costal adaxial stereid band smaller than the abaxial. Capsule stegocarpic, ovate to cylindrical, peristome present or absent. In Weissia pabstiana the leaf apex that is plane and the capsule gymnostomous (without peristome), but both characteristics are included in the variation found in W. controversa .
