MESENTINA CRAMER, 1780

( FIG. 38 View Figures 33–38 )

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] mesentina Cramer, 1780a: 140 , 175, pl.270, figs A, B [original plate 240, figs C, C] (junior primary homonym of Papilio mesentina Cramer, 1777 [ Nymphalidae ]). ‘Côte de Coromandel’ [= south-eastern India] (Cornelis van Lennep).

Papilio View in CoL Danaus Candidus View in CoL mesentina, Stoll, 1782b: 5 [No. 55].

Material examined. 1 ♂, no data, Felder coll. ( BMNH (E)#665121), is a good match for original plate 240, figs C, C, especially the underside; the thorax has clearly been re-pinned and the left hindwing largely replaced. As this species was described from van Lennep’s collection it is possible that this specimen is a syntype

Current status. Invalid senior subjective synonym of Belenois a. aurota (Fabricius, 1793) ( Ackery et al., 1995).
