NUMITOR CRAMER, 1777

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] numitor Cramer, 1777: 25 , pl.113, 150, fig. B [original plate 80, fig. B]. Surinam.

Papilio Eques Trojanus numitor, 1782b: 2 [No. 22].

Material examined. 1 ♂, with van Lennep label ‘No. 22. NUMITOR Cr. II. 113. B.’ and Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665201) has been repinned and repaired; the stylized original plate 80, fig. B is not a good match, e.g. it does not show any of the bright yellow markings on the hindwing, although a row of obscure yellowish submarginal spots is shown. This specimen differs from the figure too much for it to be considered as a type. It is possible that the van Lennep label has become associated with the wrong specimen .

Current status and identity. Considered a junior subjective synonym of Battus b. belus ( Cramer, 1777) ( Tyler et al., 1994) (and the figure is a better fit for B. belus ), but note that the above specimen is Battus lycidas ( Cramer, 1777) . Fortunately, numitor does not have priority over either name.
