Type Locality: Mexico, in the mountains.
Vernacular Names: Mexican Hairy Dwarf Porcupine.

Distribution: San Luis Potosi and Yucatan ( Mexico) to W Panama, to 3,000 m ( Emmons and Feer, 1997).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix III ( Honduras); IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Emmons and Feer (1997:222) indicated that the small forms from Chiriquí, Panama had been recognized as a distinct species (laenatus).
