Geographical distribution: southern and eastern United States in the Nearctic region to Colombia in the Neotropical region; introduced into the Hawaiian Islands.

Habitat: very common in Cuba, inhabiting ponds, lakes, marshes, and river pools up to 600 m above sealevel. Alayo (1967, 1974) mentioned examining specimens from all Cuban provinces, without detailing the distribution of the species throughout the island.
