Subfamily Orthocladiinae View in CoL
This subfamily contains the most genera (53) and species of (211) chironomids in Alaska. This is not unusual since the subfamily is the largest subfamily of Chironomidae worldwide ( Ashe & O’Connor 2012). The bioregion with the most species records found was the Southeastern, which is where most of our collections were concentrated. Larvae in this subfamily are found in a wide variety of habitats ranging from terrestrial, seeps, springs, streams/ rivers, small ponds to large lakes, and coastal marine areas ( Epler 2001).
