Abiskomyia Edwards, 1937 View in CoL
The genus was known by two species, Abiskomyia virgo Edwards and Abiskomyia paravirgo (Goetghebuer 1940) . Makarchenko & Makarchenko (2015b) described three additional species Abiskomyia . korbokhon, Abiskomyia levanidovi , and Abiskomyia rivalis and one subspecies Abiskomyia virgo orientalis from Russia’s Far East and its bordering territories.
Hershey (1985) found larvae of Abiskomyia virgo virgo Edwards, 1937 as a minor component of Toolik Lake in Alaska. We collected larvae of A. virgo virgo from the East Alsek River in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Larvae construct cylindrical cases similar to those built by Tanytarsus species. Sexually active adults do not form a mating swarm in the air but rather skate on the surface of the water where mating occurs. Lindeberg (1974) has reported on strains of parthenogenetic females in Finnish Lapland living alongside a sexually reproductive population.
