Our record of Oliveridia tricornis ( Oliver, 1976) from Alaska is based on a female collected at the outlet of the Antler River north of Juneau ( Fig. 9Q View FIGURE 9 ) in mid-August. There are additional larval records of Oliveridia from St. Matthew Island ( Sikes et al. 2016).
The larvae of Oliveridia are typically associated with ultraoligotrophic lakes across the Arctic. The adults of O. tricornis mate on the ground, clustering on rocks and bare ground at the margins of the lakes. Males are very active, trying to mate with any other chironomid species they encounter. Adults rarely fly, but may rise a half meter off the ground on calm, warm days ( Oliver 1976).
