Holotype:— PERU. Próximo ao rio Maragnon, “ Hibiscus paniculatus ”, Dombey s.n. ( P barcode P02285766 ! [digital image], isotype: CTES)
Taxonomic notes: —The important characteristics of P. paniculata are observed in the falciform stipules and the arrangement of the flowers aggregated into panicle inflorescences.Another relevant feature is the shrub habit, pubescent branches, ovate (cordiform) leaves (5.5‒11.5 × 4.3‒11.1 cm) and epicalyx with 6‒8 filiform bracteoles.
Distribution, habitat and IUCN threat status: —This species occurs in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil ( Fryxell, 1999). In Brazil, it is registered in the North (Pará), Northeast (Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba and Pernambuco), Midwest (Mato Grosso do Sul), and Southeast (Minas Gerais and São Paulo) (Flora e Funga do Brasil, 2022). In Pernambuco it is recorded in two municipalities in the Mata Zone ( Mata Úmida subzone). There are no records that indicate occurrence within conservation units. As per the criteria B of IUCN (2022), the species is here considered Least Concern (LC) with larger EOO of 18,839,507.674 Km² and an AOO of 932.000 Km². In addition, the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes is largely urbanized and the species may no longer exist there.
Phenology: —Collected with flowers and fruits in July.
