Villa Lioy, 1864: 732 . Typespecies: Anthrax abbadon Fabricius, 1794
Diagnosis. Medium to large (5–15 mm). Head globular, face not projecting; antennae with one elongate, tapered flagellomere; proboscis not projecting, with broad fleshy labella. Wing with R 4 + 5 not branched (two submarginal cells), anal cell open; hyaline or with a basicostal infuscation; patagium usually well developed and composed of dense scales. Legs, fore tibiae spiculate, pulvilli absent. Abdomen elongate ovate or parallelsided. Male genitalia with a large epiphallus often with apical spines or spicules. Spermathecal reservoir with an asymmetrical proximal dilation and a spherical apical dilation. Vestiture composed of black, brownish, yellowish or white hair and scales; sometimes with patches silvery scales, particularly the patagium and on apical abdominal tergites; abdomen frequently with bands of contrasting black and pale scale bands and sometimes with tufts of black scales or hair at sides of some tergites, particularly 5 and 6.
