Coeliccia mattii View in CoL sp.nov.

( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B; 3C–D; 4E–H; 5A–B, 6B)

Etymology. This species is named in honor of Dr. Matti Hämäläinen, who has supported the authors in their study of the Vietnamese odonate fauna; mattii , a noun in the genitive case.

Type material. Holotype ♂ and allotype ♀, Doi Cao , Loc Tan, Bao Lam district, Lam Dong Province, southern Vietnam, 21.IV.2016, Quoc Toan Phan leg. Paratypes : 7♂ 2♀, same date, location and collector; 2♂ 1♀, Tuyen Lam Lake , Da Lat, Lam Dong Province, southern Vietnam, 18.IV.2016, Tom Kompier leg. ; 1♂ 1♀, Road TL 725, Loc Bac , Bao Lam, Lam Dong Province, southern Vietnam, 16.V.2016, Tom Kompier leg.

Other material. 2♂, Suoi Tia , Tuyen Lam Lake, Da Lat, Lam Dong Province (alt. 1400m), 23–24.VI.2006, Matti Hämäläinen leg. RMNH coll. (Naturalis Biodiversity Center (formerly Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie), Leiden, the Netherlands) ; 3♂, Giang Ly , Khanh Vinh, Khanh Hoa Province, 18.VI.2013, Wen – Chi Yeh leg.

Description of holotype male. Head ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C–D). Labrum, mandibles, clypeus and frons matte black. Genae pale bluish, this extending somewhat onto antefrons to below base of antennae. Antennae black apart from yellowish base of second and top of first segments. Top of head matte black with two tiny yellow spots in front of lateral ocelli, directed towards the antennae, and two waterdrop-shaped pale yellow postocular spots.

Thorax ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C). Prothorax matte black, extensively grey-blue pruinose. Synthorax mostly black and extensively covered by pruinosity. Mesinfraepisternum completely black. Metepimeron pale yellow, but black from metepisternum extending over metapleural suture onto its central part.

Legs. Coxae of first and second pairs of legs yellow with some black laterally, those of third pair of legs entirely yellow. Femora pale yellow, flexor and extensor surfaces black. Tibiae pale yellow, anterior surface black. Tarsi black.

Wings ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 H) hyaline with black venation. 19–20 Postnodal crossveins in hindwing, and 22–23 in forewing. Pterostigma brown with narrow pale margin, covering 1.5–2 underlying cells.

Abdomen. S1–7 black dorsally shading into yellowish brown ventrally, darker at apices of segments. S8–9 entirely black. S10 black with posterior margin yellowish as Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 E–F.

Anal appendages ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 E–F) entirely yellow; cerci short, as long as S10, with a large black-tipped tooth ventrally, apex at about three-fifths, hooked forwards, easily visible in lateral view, and a small basal interior tooth only sometimes visible in dorsal view. Paraprocts simple structurally and longer than cerci, with an apical black tooth.

Genital ligula ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 G) Terminal segment bifurcated from base two long flagella, tips with a rearwarddirected, sharp-pointed spur, so that they resemble a small barbed arrowhead.

Measurements (mm). Hindwing 24; abdomen + appendages 36.

Description of allotype female. Head ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 A). Color pattern of head similar to that of male. Labrum, clypeus, frons and top of head all black, apart from pale blue genae, base of mandibles pale above and black below, genae connected by transverse stripe over antefrons just above postclypeus, interrupted by black in the middle. Top of head with two small yellow spots adjacent to the antennae and two drop-shaped postocular spots.

Thorax ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 A–B). Prothorax entirely black dorsally, propleuron yellowish. Posterior pronotal lobe centrally elongated into a flattened projection, tapering to a triangular point, directed posteriorly, and elongated into two earshaped projections that curve apically on either side. Synthorax largely black with yellow areas as follows: thin antehumeral stripe, mesinfraepisternum almost entirely black, only marginally yellow ventrally. Metepisternum yellow with a distinct black stripe running along posterior part of metapleural suture. Metepimeron entirely yellowish.

Legs. Coxae yellow. Femora pale yellow, flexor and extensor surfaces black. Tibiae pale yellow, flexor surface black. Tarsi black.

Wings hyaline, 18 postnodal crossveins in hindwing and 19 in forewing. Pterostigma brown with narrow pale margin, covering 1.5–2 underlying cells.

Abdomen. S1 largely yellow, only dorsum black. S2–7 black dorsally and laterally, only venter paler. S8 almost completely yellow, with small black area dorsally adjacent to anterior margin. S9 entirely black. S10 and cerci black, ovipositor black with small yellow anterior spot and dorsum of apex, extending beyond cerci approximately the length of S10.

Measurements (mm). Hind wing 22; abdomen + appendages 39.

Variation in paratype males. The color pattern of S10 of the male paratypes is highly variable, ranging from very dark to largely yellow. Measurements vary as follows: hindwing 24–26 mm and abdomen including appendages 38–39.5 mm.

Variation in paratype females. The tip of the elongated projection from the posterior lobe of the prothorax is more rounded in some paratypes of Coeliccia mattii , and the extent of yellow both dorsally and laterally on S9 varies from all black to distinctly marked.

Habitat. This species prefers swampy shallow streams on well–forested mountains. Found especially in areas where small streams spread out into wet areas with much leaf litter and some low vegetation, a habitat shared with, for instance, Hylaeothemis clementia .
