( 1981a:234, listing, comb. change ( Brachylinga ). Type locality Cape May , New Jersey. Lectotype male in USNM (Type Number 7562).

Diagnosis

Brachylinga morata is taxonomically associated with B. albifrons , B. cinerea and B. pavida in having the postocular, mesonotal, and coxal macrosetae dark reddish brown; in having the male parafacial silver or gray over the entire surface; and the male frons setose. Brachylinga morata differs from B. albifrons , B. cinerea , and B. pavida in having an anterodorsal patch of short, dark reddish brown setae on the gena. It differs from B. albifrons in lacking an aggregation of anteromedial setae on the gonocoxite ( Fig. 40); from B. cinerea in lacking a dorsal carina on the distiphallus ( Fig. 132); and from B. pavida in having the setae on the hindcoxa white and the male tergite 8 ( Fig. 17) narrow medially.

Distribution

Brachylinga morata ranges from Florida north to New York, west to Illinois and Alabama ( Fig. 211)

Habitats and phenology

Brachylinga morata has been handnetted on a lakeshore and sand dunes, and in sand pine, scrub oak and saw palmetto; collected at ultraviolet and mercury vapor lights; and in emergence traps or Malaise traps, occasionally baited with dry ice. Adults have been collected from March through August.

Specimens examined

Type specimens: Coquillett (1893:225) described Psilocephala morata based on a male from Cape May, New Jersey and a female from St. Augustine, Florida. Coquillett designated no specific holotype, although the male and female in the MCZ bear a holotype label on the New Jersey specimen and an allotype label on the Florida specimen. Both these specimens are here considered syntypes of Coquillet’s type series. One male and one female syntypes were examined; the male is labeled "Cape May, New Jersey " in black type and "6.14.91" handwritten in ink on a white label, "Type" (in black type) "7562" (handwritten in ink) on a red label, " Collection C. W. Johnson " in black type on a white label. The female is labeled "St. Augustine, Fla." in black type, " Collection C. W. Johnson " in black type on a white label. The male from Cape May, New Jersey, Type No. 7562, MCZ is designated as the lectotype. This lectotype is designated in order to fix the

concept of Psilocephala morata Coquillett and to ensure universal and consistent interpretation of the same. The other specimen from St. Augustine, Florida is designated as a paralectotype.
