16. Burmeistera diazii Garzón & F.González, Caldasia View in CoL 36: 254. 2014.

Type:— COLOMBIA. Antioquia: Sonsón, vereda Palmita , trail to páramo de las Palomas , ca. 7 km NNE turnoff to Río Verde along Sonsón-Río Verde road, ca. 2525‒2750 m; ca. 5°45´N, 75°20´W, 8 Apr 1988 (fl, fr), J. L. Luteyn & R. Callejas 11983 (holotype: HUA!; isotypes: COL!, NY!). Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 , 10A–D View FIGURE 10 GoogleMaps .

Terrestrial or epiphytic herbs with pendant or slightly scandent twigs up to 1.2 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 0.5‒1.5 cm long, glabrous; blade ovate to slightly ovate-lanceolate (3.0‒) 4.0‒6.0 (‒7.5) × (1.5) 2.5‒3.0 (‒4.0) cm, glabrous above and beneath, base rounded, slightly asymmetric, apex obtuse to rounded, margin slightly crenate, with 9 to 12 intramarginal to extramarginal hydathodes per side, secondary veins 7 to 8 (rarely to 12) per side, higher order venation markedly reticulate beneath, intramarginal vein lacking. Flowers solitary, axillary, the distalmost flower appearing pseudoterminal as it overtops and lateralizes the shoot apex. Peduncle (4.5‒) 6.5‒7.5 (‒9.0) long, glabrous to sparsely puberulous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 5‒7 × 5‒6 mm, glabrous to puberulous. Calyx lobes narrowly lanceolate, 13‒16 × 2‒3 mm, as long as corolla tube or longer, patent, glabrous to sparsely puberulous, basally spaced by sinuses up to 3 mm wide, margin slightly toothed, teeth 3 to 7 per side. Corolla green with a few purple spots, sparsely puberulous; tube 9‒13 mm long, 2‒3 mm diameter at its mid-level, slightly inflated proximally; lobes narrowly triangular, slightly falcate, apex obtuse, dorsal lobes 8‒9 × 2‒4 mm, lateral lobes 5‒7 × 2‒3 mm, ventral lobe 5‒6 × 2‒3 mm. Synandrium 2.6‒3.0 cm long, exserted up to 11 mm; filament tube slightly curved, 2.2‒2.4 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 4‒6 mm long, glabrous, ventral anthers ebarbate. Berries broadly obconic, 0.8‒1.1 × 0.7‒1.0 cm, not inflated, glabrous, green suffused with purple.

Phenology: —The species sets flowers in February, April and November, and fruits in April.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera diazii is restricted to cloud forests of the Western and Central cordilleras in Antioquia, at elevations between 1800 and 2750 m. Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], B. diazii qualifies as Critically Endangered.

Notes: — Burmeistera diazii differs from its Colombian congeners by the leaf blade glabrous beneath, and without intramarginal vein; the distalmost flower appearing pseudoterminal due to the lateralization of the shoot apex, and strongly exceeding it; the dorsal lobes of the corolla 8–9 mm long; and the synandrium exserted up to 11 mm.
