*However, the residue specimens may also be called “Lectoparatype or Paralectotype or Syntype residue…..In the next code this issue may be addressed. This problem was discussed in 1980s whether to use “Lectoparatype” or “ Paralectotype ”, but a decision was not taken and since then more than 35 years have passed.—Dr. K. N. Gandhi (in personal communication).
Distribution:—Apparently endemic to Western Ghats, Maharashtra: Khandala, plain behind the saddle; Lonavla; Mawal and Pune [Poona]. According to POWO (2021), it also occurs on Lesser Sunda Islands [Far East, Indonesian Archipelago], for which we found no evidence.
Typification Note:—In the protologue, Hooker (1896) emphasized on the collection he received from Lisboa, the note reads “Sent by Lisboa as A. odoratus [No. 6, Andropogon odoratus ], but apparently very different from the description of that plant and from the specimens received in the strongly compressed and acutely keeled sheaths, broad leaves and inflorescence”. The distinctiveness of the specimen (No. 6, A. odoratus ) was also recognized by Dr. Lisboa himself, who scribed with a pencil “Not No. 6 Andropogon odoratus ” on the label placed at the lower right hand side of the herbarium sheet (K001057429). Since, it originated from the collection of A. odoratus Lisboa (1889: 123) ; it is very likely to have been collected from the type locality of the former, i.e. Khardi, Thane district [part of Deccan Peninsula]. Other weak possibility is Lonavla [Lanowli, an orthographic variant of Lonavla], as Mrs. Lisboa remarks the prevalence of A. odoratus near the railway station but this area comes under Western Ghats [eroded edges of the Deccan Peninsula] which is away from the main Deccan Peninsula (the type locality). Another specimen indicated by J.D. Hooker (1896), along with Lisboa’s specimen, was sent by Woodrow s.n. [179] (K000245659) collected in 1880 from “Deccan, India ” as reads on that sheet in pencil. Even for this collection the precise locality was not known.
The best and complete specimen having roots, culm, leaves and the inflorescences with the supplementary pencil-drawn sketches on the herbarium sheet is designated here as lectotype of the name Andropogon compressus in conformity with Art. 9.3 of the International Code of Nomenclature (ICN; Turland et al. 2018). Other specimen by “ Woodrow 179” (K000245659) is also regarded as the original material of A. compressus and thus has been selected here as “ Paralectotype ”.
