Hoffeinsodes longicauda View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 3a–d View FIGURE 3 , 8 c,d View FIGURE 8 )

Etymology. The name refers to the long postepandrial lobes.

Diagnosis. Hoffeinsodes species, cross sclerite with median setose tip, gonostyli with sharp tip, posterolateral epandrium lobes very prolonged.

Material. Holotype male, no 1379- 6 in coll. Hoffeins.

Geological stratum. Baltic amber.

State of preservation. Specimen well conserved, head, thorax and abdomen recognizable. Right antennae complete, left with scape, pedicel and basal 3 flagellomeres. Palpi well preserved. Front and hind legs broken but positioned close to the specimen.

Syninclusions. Collembola, stellar hairs.

Description. Head with oval eyes, distance between eyes approx. 8-10 facet diameters. Antenna with scape, pedicel and 14 flagellomeres; relative length of scape, pedicel and flagellomeres: 12-15-76 -53-51-49-43-39-35-34- 31-27-25-22-21-23. Absolute length: 0.07-0.09-0.45-0.31-0.30-0.29-0.25-0.23-0.21-0.20-0.18-0.16-0.15-0.13- 0.12-0.14 mm. Palpus 4 segmented; relative length: 11-42-62-104; absolute length: 0.06-0.25- 0.36-0.61 mm.

Head length 0.36 mm. Length of thorax + abdomen, without genitalia 4.10 mm; genitalia 0.78 mm. Thorax with oval swellings above halters with basal rings of setae.

Wing length 3.59 mm. Sc ends in C with short sc-r crossvein at tip. First basal cell elongate sub-rectangular, extending to Sc tip. R2+3 arises from beyond middle of basal cell, R2 shorter than R2+3. R4 originates from front edge, R5 from middle of basal cell. M1+2 short, comes from hind edge of first basal cell. M3+4 launches basally of R2+3 from hind margin of first basal cell. Cross vein m-cu near fork M3/M4. CuA and CuP run parallel, both curved distally to hind wing margin.

Abdomen consists of 8 segments and genitalia. First segment narrower than segments 2–5; segment 7 damaged; inversion of genitalia by segments 7 and 8. Cross sclerite with a single median setose tip. Gonostyli simple, about rectangular with a ventral short hook at apex; aedeagus not discernable. Epandrium with long slightly bent posterolateral lobes, about twice as long as proctiger + cerci. Proctiger thinly sclerotized with blunt tip, distorted ventrally, cerci small oval setose.

Comments. Due to the presence of a cross sclerite the species is included in Hoffeinsodes . The species is distinguished from its congeners by the elongate lateral postepandrial lobes, the sclerite with a single median tip, and the specifically shaped gonostyli. The long postepandrial lobes reminds of the epandrial appendages of Phlebotominae .
