Tetragonoschema (Patagoschema) patagonicum Obenberger, 1922 View in CoL

( Figs. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 72 View FIGURES 72 – 81 )

Tetragonoschema patagonicum Obenberger, 1922: 69 View in CoL . Type locality: Argentina, Patagonia, Santa Cruz.

Tetragonoschema patagonicum: Obenberger, 1930: 559 View in CoL (catalogue); Blackwelder, 1944: 315 (patagonica, checklist); Théry, 1944: 20 (revision, key, redescription); Cobos, 1959: 13 (taxonomy); Bellamy, 2008: 1520 (catalogue).

Type specimen studied (number of syntypes unknown). Lectotype ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ), here designated (male, NMPC): “[ Argentina] Patagonia, Sta Cruz [h] [Departamento Santa Cruz] // Typus [p, red] // Tetragonoschema patagonicum m. Type [h] Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae Inv. [p] 22833 [h]”.

Diagnosis Rather convex, subparallel; pronotum and elytra with short, recumbent, white pubescence; aedeagus regularly spindle-shaped ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 72 – 81 ); the rather unusual shape of pronotum ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ) and long frontal pubescence are the best characters distinguishing this species from other species of the subgenus Patagoschema.

Length: 4.6 mm.

Since the number of syntypes is unknown I hereby designate the male from NMPC as the lectotype of T. patagonicum Obenberger, 1922 .

Bionomy. Unknown.

Sexual dimorphism. Female unknown.

Distribution. Argentina—“Patagonia”, prov. Santa Cruz.

Note. The southernmost distributed species of the genus Tetragonoschema . The province of Santa Cruz is situated south of latitude 46 where the climatic conditions are rather extreme and T. (P.) patagonicum is most probably one of the southernmost distributed species of the Neotropical Buprestids. Unfortunately no further specimen has been found in collections.
