Remarks. Chthonius caoduroi was described by Callaini (1987) from three males and three females that were collected in the cave Grotta Sant’Angelo (Trecchina, Basilicata), so far the only locality known for the species. I agree with Callaini (1987) in considering C. caoduroi morphologically similar to the subterranean C. multidentatus from Sicily from which it differs in the following main characters: anterior eyes with flat lens, posterior reduced to a pale cuticular area (eyes absent in C. multidentatus ); tergite I with 2 or 3 setae (4 setae in C. multidentatus ); fixed and movable chelal fingers (♂ ♀) with 64–71 and 39–53 teeth respectively (83–97 and 60–77 in C. multidentatus ); fixed and movable chelal fingers (♂ ♀) at level of est -ist and st -t, respectively, with 6–7 and 5 teeth occupying 0.1 mm, distance between successive apices 0.014 –0.015 and 0.018 –0.020 mm respectively (with 11–12 and 7–10 teeth occupying 0.1 mm, distance between successive apices 0.008 –0.009 and 0.010 –0.014 mm, respectively, in C. multidentatus ); ratio of pedipalpal femur/carapace (♂ ♀) 1.6–1.7 (1.35–1.55 in C. multidentatus ).

Chthonius caoduroi is also morphologically similar to the subterranean C. gallettii from Sicily and C. inguscioi from Apulia. It differs from C. gallettii in the following main characters: anterior margin of carapace with 1 preocular microseta on each side (2 preocular microsetae in C. gallettii ); tergite I with 2 or 3 setae (4 setae in C. gallettii ); male chela length 1.28–1.30 mm, 6.7–6.8 times as long as deep (1.52 mm, 7.4 times as long as deep in C. gallettii ); fixed and movable chelal fingers of males with 66–71 and 39–43 teeth respectively (70 and 50 in C. gallettii ).

Chthonius caoduroi differs from the hypogean C. inguscioi from Apulia in the following main characters: anterior margin of carapace with 1 preocular microseta on each side (2 preocular microsetae in C. inguscioi ); tergite I with 2 or 3 setae (4 setae in C. inguscioi ); male chela length 1.28–1.30 mm, 6.7–6.8 times as long as deep (0.8–1.0 mm, 6.25–6.3 times as long as deep in C. inguscioi ); fixed and movable chelal fingers (♂ ♀) at level of est -ist and st -t, respectively, with 6–7 and 5 teeth occupying 0.1 mm, distance between successive apices 0.014 –0.015 and 0.018 –0.020 mm respectively (with 11–12 and 9–10 teeth occupying 0.1 mm, distance between successive apices 0.009 and 0.009 –0.011 mm respectively, in C. inguscioi ).

The above description of Chthonius caoduroi partially incorporates the one of Callaini (1987).
